reducing time, cost, & labor, of package delivery logistics

PROJECT OVERVIEW
introducing one of the worlds largest companies to package delivery
With normal delivery vans, drivers take repeated trips back and forth to their vehicle to deliver to multiple addresses in the area This amount of walking and repetition is strenuous, increases rate of injury, and wastes time. OX’s semi-autonomy and small size allows it to follow the driver on footpaths while holding the loads of parcels; allowing for consecutive delivery in quick succession and reducing the amount of walking required for the delivery driver.

THE OLD VS THE NEW
DELIVERY PROCESS

problems and pain points
Last mile delivery is an inefficient process burdened with processes that waste time through the high number of steps, the inclusion of strenuous labor through the loading of packages, repeated back and forth steps, and increased fuel consumption and traffic congestion because of normal delivery vehicle size.

With normal delivery vans, drivers park and take repeated trips back and forth to their vehicle to deliver packages to multiple addresses in the area.
concept and solution
By following the driver, back and forth trips to the vehicle to retrieve packages are no longer needed, the total amount of walking is reduced, saving time and labor; and the vehicle no longer congests traffic.

The new process
step-by-step

step 1
Multiple cargo holds are pre-loaded and queued up in the warehouse for maximum time efficiency.
step 2
Integrated scanners within each cargo hold scans each package as they are loaded, marking them as loaded on vehicle.
step 3
Integrated scanners within each cargo hold scans each package as they are loaded, marking them as loaded on vehicle.
step 4
An optimized GPS route determined by the package scanner syncs to the smart tablet dashboard in the driver’s cockpit. The driver is ready to start their route.

design
philosophy

FUNCTIONAL AND FUTURIST
OX was designed to meet the high functional needs of a typical delivery vehicle, but with features and functions to bring the processs of package delivery into the future.
BALANCED PROPORTIONS
The dimensions required for OX to fit into the urban context was 4x8 feet, this meant the proportions would be atypical and thus would be a challenge to create an aesthetically beautifull design.

FUNCTIONAL FEATURES
FOR EXCELLENT DELIVERY
PERSON EXPERIENCE

user experience
All of the features included in the OX package were purely designed for increasing efficiency of the delivery process and making the job of a delivery person easier.

ideation &
refinement process

designing intent
The final design concept chosen was one I designed, but one we all agreed upon because it gave all of us an instant feeling of exhilaration. With the chosen exterior design, my intent was to create something which had a soft masculinity to it, something which could communicate calm strength in its attitude.
designing as a team
In order to design most efficiently, each of us tackled a specific aspect of OX that required our attention. We decided on what each of our strongest skills were, and then we were delegated to pursue working on OX according to those main strengths.
